Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy tabletop RPG, originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. Its first edition was published in 1974, with later editions being released in 1977, 1989, 2000, 2003, 2008, and 2014.

The game was modeled after wargames, but unlike its predecessors, allowed players to create their own, unique characters. In the game, the characters embark on fantasy journeys while a Dungeon Master (DM) serves as the host, referee, and storyteller, maintaining the setting that the adventures occur, and playing as the divine beasts and monsters that inhabit it. The characters form a team and interact with each other and the world around them, solving problems, fighting enemies, gather treasure and knowledge, and complete quests. Throughout the game, characters gain experience points (XP) to move up in levels, gaining experience and skills as they do so.
